Questions and Problems. End-of-chapter questions and problems have been substantially revised, improving their variety and interest, while maintaining their clarity and quality. Revamped questions have been crafted to better utilize physics education research, with many redesigned as ranking or multiple-choice problems. You will find more multi-step problems, requiring both quantitative and conceptual answers, as well as more problems that require a symbolic answer. Every end of chapter question and problem can be assigned and graded through the Enhanced WebAssign homework management system.
Worked Examples. The "Worked Examples" have always been a hallmark of the text, and with this edition each "Worked Example" has been recast in a two-column format, providing conceptual explanations next to the math for every step. These revised examples closely follow the authors’’ proven "General Problem Solving Strategy," which is introduced in Chapter 2 to reinforce good problem solving habits. About one-third of the worked examples include "What If?" extensions, which further reinforce conceptual understanding. Summaries. Each chapter contains a "Summary" that reviews the important concepts and equations discussed in that chapter. The format of the end-of-chapter "Summary" has been completely revised for the Seventh Edition. Now divided into three sections for students to more easily use as a review tool, each "Summary" includes: Definitions, Concepts and Principles, and Analysis Models for Problem Solving. In each of these sections, flashcard-type boxes focus on each separate definition, concept, principle, or analysis model.
Math Appendix. This valuable tool for students has been updated to show essential math concepts in a physics context. This resource is ideal for students who need a quick review on topics such as algebra and trigonometry.
Content Changes. Vectors are now denoted in bold face with an arrow over them, making them easier to recognize. Chapters 7 and 8 on energy have been completely reorganized in order to prepare students for a unified approach to energy that is used throughout the text. A new section in Chapter 9 teaches students how to analyze deformable systems with the conservation of energy equation and the impulse-momentum theorem. Features
Problem Solving Strategy. A General Problem Solving Strategy is outlined early in the text and provides a series of steps similar to those taken by professional physicists in solving problems. This problem solving strategy is revisited in each "Worked Example," so students approach problems consistently, developing stronger problem-solving skills. The General Problem Solving Strategy is further reinforced by "Problem-Solving Strategy" boxes that provide additional tips for tackling specific types of problems.
Modeling. Certain chapters include "Analysis Models," which are physical situations that occur so often (such as the particle under constant acceleration, the isolated systems, or the wave under refraction) that an understanding of them can be used as a model for solving an unfamiliar problem. These models are discussed in the chapter and the student is reminded of them in the "Summary" in the Analysis Models for Problem Solving section.
Hallmark Problem Sets. An extensive set of problems is included at the end of each chapter; in all, the text contains about 3,000 problems. Answers to odd-numbered problems are provided at the end of the book. For the convenience of both the student and the instructor, about two thirds of the problems are keyed to specific sections of the chapter. The remaining problems, labeled "Additional Problems," require students to synthesize key ideas from several sections. Each problem is ranked as either straightforward, intermediate, or challenging. Every End of Chapter problem can be assigned and graded through the Enhanced WebAssign homework management system.
Problem Variety. The authors include a great diversity of problem types, including those that require students to think qualitatively in some parts and quantitatively in others; problems asking for solutions in symbols, as well as many problems asking for numerical answers; review problems requiring the student to combine concepts covered in the chapter with those discussed in previous chapters; and problems that ask the student to reason in order-of-magnitude terms. Each chapter also contains at least one problem applying ideas and methods from differential calculus, and one using integral calculus.
Questions. "Questions" at the end of each chapter include multiple-choice, ranking, and true-false. You can select items to assign as homework or to use in the classroom with "peer instruction" methods or with "clicker" systems. Over 800 questions are included in this edition. Answers to selected questions are included in the Student Solutions Manual and Study Guide (denoted in the text by an icon), and answers to all questions are found in the Instructor’’s Solutions Manual. All of the "Questions" can be assigned and graded through the Enhanced WebAssign homework management system.
Quick Quizzes. "Quick Quizzes" allow students to test their understanding of physical concepts. The questions require students to make decisions on the basis of sound reasoning, and some of them have been written to help students overcome common misconceptions. "Quick Quizzes" have been cast in an objective format, including multiple choice, true?false, and ranking. Answers are found at the end of each chapter. The "Quick Quizzes" can be assigned and graded through the Enhanced WebAssign homework management system and are also formatted to be used in audience response systems.
Pitfall Preventions. The text includes over 200 "Pitfall Preventions" to help students avoid common mistakes and misunderstandings. Placed in the margins of the text, these boxes address common student misconceptions and situations in which students often follow unproductive paths.
Clarifying Design. The book’’s clean and clear visual program helps students understand concepts and facilitates their review of the material. A functional color chart is found at the front of the book, and lists the color-coded symbols used in the text diagrams. This system is followed consistently throughout the text.
