This Sixth Edition of OCEANOGRAPHY conveys Garrison’s enthusiasm for oceanography to non-science students and concentrates on maximizing student learning. Garrison brings focus and excitement to students’ natural appreciation of the complexities of the ocean with integrated technology and a stunning visual program. Drawing on his more than thirty years of teaching experience, Garrison writes how students learn best: he is the only oceanography author to consistently consult students about each new edition and incorporate their suggestions, creating a dynamic, current student focus. New to this edition
The completely expanded and updated media package for instructors includes a PowerLecture CD that contains animations, zoomable art figures, as well as progressing step-by-step artwork illustrating oceanographic processes. The PowerLecture CD cuts down on instructor prep time and makes lecture presentation more powerful and visual.
Every chapter contains new and updated illustrations and graphics, some of which are based on sources from GWAP (the Global Warming Art Project). The book’’s new graphics enhance the visual appeal of the text, making it easier for students to grasp important concepts in marine science.
This new edition incorporates the latest current events and research--Garrison has revised every chapter in the book with statistics, graphics, data, and/or illustrations.
Chapter 3, "Earth Structure and Plate Tectonics," now offers more information on Earth’’s magnetic field, its generation, and its cause.
In Chapter 6, "Water and Ocean Structure," there is new data on greenhouse warming and the acceleration of water cycling through the North Atlantic, as well as new graphics on world ocean temperature and salinity, with divisions by latitude.
In Chapter 8, a new chapter-opening vignette discusses Steve Fossett’’s latest atmospheric adventure, and new research findings are included that windblown spray "lubricates" tropical cyclones by decoupling wind energy from ocean surface friction.
More information is now included in Chapter 17 on the unbalancing ecological effects of overfishing, as well as new information on energy, mariculture, and methane hydrates.
Throughout the book, new "Concept Checks" ask critical questions as they arise within the chapter. This not only engages students more in the material, but enhances their critical thinking skills.
Many changes have been motivated by reviewer suggestion. This includes adding historical context in the introduction to Chapter 9, and mentioning greenhouse gases and global warming in the discussion of the carbon cycle in Chapter 13.


Features
"Questions From Students" at the end of each chapter ask and answer the most common questions that students have asked following a lecture. This feature provides students with answers to the questions that are most likely on their minds.
OCEANOGRAPHY emphasizes applications, connections, and interrelationships to other fields--demonstrating the integration of all sciences that exists in the study of oceanography.
Extensive coverage of physical oceanography provides a balance of physical and biological oceanography, most notably in the chapters on Plate Tectonics (Chapter 3), Continental Margins and Ocean Basins (Chapter 4), Sediments (Chapter 5), Circulation of the Ocean (Chapter 9), and Tides (Chapter 11).
Unique integration of satellite images through the text enhances the visual presentation of the material.
An emphasis on science as a process shows students the importance of the scientific process in all areas of study. This edition further underscores the difference between theory and law, as well as the circular nature of the scientific method (in which each advance in theory suggests new questions).
This edition can be bundled with custom modules on region-specific geology, or with natural hazards modules. Modules can be shrink-wrapped with the text, or bound in to the text.
Each chapter summary gives students a complete "Chapter in Perspective," a useful tool that contains a narrative review and a brief look ahead (providing continuity between chapters).
