James House (chemistry, Illinois State U., Normal) and Kathleen House (chemistry, Illinois Wesleyan U., Bloomington) have written a textbook that’s designed to be portable and useful for intermediate level chemistry courses. Throughout the text the authors include application of principles of structure and bonding to predict and explain reactions in order to systemize reactions and lead the reader to become comfortable with prediction. The initial chapters provide a review and expansion of general chemistry and include a section on quantum mechanics. Subsequent chapters are devoted to the chemistry of hydrogen, boron, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, the Noble gases, and transition metals, among other topics. Each chapter contains problems and a list of references.
